Notification procedure

The Association has drafted two procedures whereby safety alerts or other notifiable events may be brought to the attention of other members and the general public so that remedial action may be quickly taken.

Public notification of safety alerts or other matters

Authorised communications may be made to AEA ONLY through a member of AEA's Executive Committee, giving brief details of the nature of the problem and a contact name and phone number., with the request that those details be published on the web site or referred to the Technical Committee for investigation and issue of a report. Click here for the notification form.

All such communications are to be lodged in writing and ONLY through a member of AEA's Executive Committee.

The following events are notified for information of members.

Subject Safety Alert - Bronze rim of crown wheel in W200/W250 gears

Installation: (Nr, Building Address,…)

Dear Sir / Madam

The lift/s identified above were originally installed with a Schindler manufactured gearbox

referred to as model W200 or W250. During its lifetime, the gear set used in this gearbox is

subject to measurable wear & tear, which may require the replacement of the gear set before

it is substantially weakened by the loss of material.

In addition, the gear set may be exposed to extraordinary shocks in it’s lifetime (such as when

full load safety gear tests are performed), and over a long period of time, symptoms of fatigue

may occur. This may lead in isolated cases to the bronze material of the crown wheel rim in

the gearbox not withstanding the loading. According to experience so far, it can be assumed

the majority of installations do not yet show symptoms of fatigue. However, with continued

operation after repeated severe impacts, deterioration in the life of the gear set is possible,

particularly where installations are more than ten years old.

As a preventive measure, Schindler performs ultrasonic tests of the bronze rim of the gears

concerned in order to identify this risk. Should the wear continue undetected, it could result in

a rupture of the bronze rim, leading to uncontrolled movement of the lift car, which may in turn

lead to serious injuries.

This testing is conducted on all relevant equipment maintained by Schindler. However, as we

do not maintain your equipment we recommend that you consider our offer in regard to

minimising your risk.

Schindler, as original equipment manufacturer, strongly recommends performing ultrasonic

tests of the crown wheel bronze rim of such installations. Upon your request, Schindler will

perform this measurement at a flat fee of $1,500 per gear set.

If the ultrasonic test shows irregularities in the bronze material, the gear set must be replaced.

If you have any questions regarding this communication, please contact Mr Robert Roseby at

(02) 9931 9900.

Yours sincerely

Schindler Lifts Australia Pty. Ltd.
